The ways in which we affect each other’s behaviors, beliefs and attitudes is defined as social psychology; it’s study can help elucidate how and why we act, think, communicate and behave the way we do. Irving Janis, a social psychologist, coined the term after studying the decisions by the Kennedy administration that lead to the failed invasion of the Bay of Pigs in 1961. He noticed that in group situations, group members may either ignore their own expertice and adopt th e opinion of the majority of the group or simply stay quiet and not raise objections in order to not disrupt the consensus (Cherry, n.d.). When dissenting opinions and critical thinking are suppressed, it is not surprising that poor decisions can arise when groups uniformity is put first. In order to prevent such consequences, Janis suggested a few ways to avoid falling into the groupthink trap: 1. appoint a person to play devil’s advocate to introduce differing opinions in order to force the rest of the group to consider other options and think critically about their own beliefs; 2. allow independent experts to attend group sessions to evaluate the decision making process; and 3. Consider holding a follow up meeting sometime in the future to allow time for group members to consider and reconsider whether their initial decision was reasonable or not (Lilienfeld, Lynn, Namy Woolf, 2014, p. 507-508). Think piece #1 I choose to answer the second topic. the dehumanizing forces of the transatlantic slave trade The Trans-Atlantic Slave trade was considered the most abominable and cruel force of slavery, during the trade, the way of obtaining the slave is dehumanizing, if we were to conclude the dehumanizing force in only one word, it would be: the minimum food, clothing, and shelter was given to those slaves who survived the Middle-Passage, and the maximum amount of work was expected of them. The first challenge was on their homeland, they were towed into a forest where no one can see them, then people who work for the capitalist beat the person to faint, and then they were chained together and â€Å"escorted† to the small boat which will send them to the slave boat. The first reason why that method is employed is that slaves were better used to the tropical weather than the capitalist, what is more, their physical building is tough and the number of slaves is much more than the solders on the ship. If they were treated like a human, whom they can get sufficient food and shelter, there might be a rebellion which may put those capitalist into peculiar situation. And at second, the slaves were considered property instead of human in the mind of those capitalists, thus they will not be treated like human. Despite all those horrible conditions and treatments, black people formed a strong culture tie between one and another to keep their rebellion force. The culture they formed is fusion of their own cultures with that of the white colonists, and the culture varies from country to country, region to region across the Americas. Mental Illness Mental Illness Mental illness is a disorder that is characterized by disturbances in a person's thought, emotions, or behavior. Mental illness refers to a wide variety of disorders, ranging from those that cause mild distress to those that impair a person's ability to function in daily life. Many have tried to figure out the reasons for mental illnesses. All of these reasons have been looked at and thought of for thousands of years. The biological perspective views mental illness as a bodily process. Where as the psychological perspectives think the role of a person's upbringing and environment are causes for mental illnesses. Researchers estimate that about 24 percent of people over eighteen in the United States suffer from some sort of common mental illness, such as depression and phobias. Studies have also shown that 2.6 percent of adults in the United States suffer from some sort of severe form of mental illness, such as schizophrenia, panic disorders, or bipolar disorders. Younger people also suffer from mental illnesses the same way that adults do. 14 to 20 percent of individuals under the age of eighteen suffer from a case of mental illness. Studies show that 9 to 13 percent of children between the ages of nine and seventeen suffer from a serious emotional disturbances, that disrupts the child's daily life. Major depression is a severe disorder. Symptoms include withdraw from family and/or friends, weight loss, sleeping problems, frequent crying, fleeing helpless, delusions, and hallucinations. This disease is usually diagnosed during adolescence; parents may notice grades dropping, poor self-image, troubled social relations, and suicidal acts. This disease may be fatal if the person becomes suicidal. Phobia is a disease where a person has an irrational fear of an object or situation. Some examples of phobias are fear of flight, cats, heights, enclosed spaces, reptiles, and the most severe is agoraphobia the fear to leave a safe place such as home. Phobias are diagnosed personhows sings of a certain fear many times. This can only affect a person's life if the phobia is severe. For example, if a person has agoraphobia, fear of leaving a safe place then that person's life would be very isolated. If a person has the fear ailurophobia, fear of heights then that person can still live a normal life. This disease is not fatal unless the person becomes depressed because of being isolated. Schizophrenia is a disturbance that causes you to have misperceptions of reality; this may also cause hallucinations and delusions.
